Virulence potential of Escherichia coli strains causing asymptomatic bacteriuria during pregnancy.

We compared the virulence properties of a collection of asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU) Escherichia coli strains to urinary tract infection (UTI) strains isolated from pregnant women in a university hospital over 1 year. The in vitro and in vivo studies suggest that ABU strains presented a virulence behavior similar to that of strains isolated from cases of cystitis.

Escherichia coli isolates causing asymptomatic bacteriuria in catheterized and noncatheterized individuals possess similar virulence properties.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common infectious diseases of humans, with Escherichia coli being responsible for >80% of all cases. Asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU) occurs when bacteria colonize the urinary tract without causing clinical symptoms and can affect both catheterized patients (catheter-associated ABU [CA-ABU]) and noncatheterized patients. Here, we compared the vir...

Analysis of Escherichia coli strains causing bacteriuria during pregnancy: selection for strains that do not express type 1 fimbriae.

Escherichia coli isolates from patients with bacteriuria of pregnancy were compared by PCR with isolates from patients with community-acquired cystitis for the presence of established virulence determinants. The strains from patients with bacteriuria of pregnancy were less likely to carry genes for P-family, S-family, and F1C adhesins, cytotoxic necrotizing factor 1, and aerobactin, but virtual...

Comparative genomics of Escherichia coli strains causing urinary tract infections.

The virulence determinants of uropathogenic Escherichia coli have been studied extensively over the years, but relatively little is known about what differentiates isolates causing various types of urinary tract infections. In this study, we compared the genomic profiles of 45 strains from a range of different clinical backgrounds, i.e., urosepsis, pyelonephritis, cystitis, and asymptomatic bac...

Study of Asymptomatic bacteriuria in pregnant women and antibiotic _ sensitivity of isolated bacteria in Tabriz 1996

Urinary tract infection ( UTI) is a common disease , which may occur as Asymptomatic in both sexes at any age. Asymptomatic bacteriuria in pregnant women can particularly cause problems for both mother and her fetus. Therefore in this study 950 pregnant women who have been referred to Tabriz university and private, gynaecology clinics for routine pregnancy cares, and had no sign s of UTI were s...
